What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)?
Added Wednesday 24.06.2009Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) has been gaining popularity recently,
appearing in many television shows, The Mentalist, Lie To Me
, and other shows by
Derren Brown. But what is NLP? It explores the relationship between how we think
(neuro), how we communicate both verbally and non-verbally (linguistic) and our
patterns of behaviour and emotion (programmes). Put simply, it allows us to have
greater control over our mind (or others) through carefully structured
communication. The in's and out's can get quite complex and there are many
courses out there that will cover it.
As most people are visual thinkers I've included a link to an example demonstration of NLP by Derren Brown on YouTube whom shows us how to buy whatever birthday present you want and convince the receiver that it is something they always wanted! Learning has never been so much fun! (Sorry I cannot embed this video, this has been removed by YouTube for this video). Plus here is another link to explain how Derren did this.
Some of the basics of NLP is knowing how to carefully select words and sounds and structure them in a way that influence behaviours, emotions and thoughts. Many of the techniques are used by life coaches, hypnotherapists, and psychologists. NLP is a science, used correctly it is a very powerful skill that we can use in all aspects of our lives from building motivation in sport or exercise to perfecting that sales pitch in business.

Your mind is a sponge
I hope this article has triggered some curiosity. You'll find lots and lots of information out there about NLP. As I mentioned there are many courses, DVDs, and books, but there is a lot of free information out there so treat your mind as a sponge. Seek and you will find!
If you haven't gathered it already I am a big fan of Derren Brown. Again, not that well know in Australia yet but definitely worth a look! Unfortunately very hard to find on shelves here in Australia, but I've been buying my copies from Amazon UK which seem to be reasonably priced (cheap for DVDs!) plus you don't have to wait for international releases or waiting for local shops to play catch up (finally getting them 6 months later! yah!). Some of his DVDs are listed below. He has also published a few books (but I'm a visual person, so sticking to the DVDs).
